The City needs a cultural festival that will uniquely showcase the history, culture, values and character of the Mandauehanons.
The proliferation of festivals all over the country calls for the creation of a cultural festival that is distinct in its identity and character and set itself apart from other mardi gras festivals.
The City also needs a major event to mark the Charter Anniversary celebration preferably one that highlights the history and growth of the City.
NAME OF THE FESTIVAL:
COMPARSA: a dance theatre competition between different youth groups that used to be held in Mandaue in the late 50’s and 60’s. Sometimes spelled with a Z, it is a Spanish word that means competition. As in most comparsa traditions in different parts of the Visayas, dance presentations were accompanied by a live band or stringed ensemble.
MANDAWE: This was how the name of the City was spelled until the granting of the City Charter in 1969.
NATURE OF THE FESTIVAL:
As one of the highlights of the annual charter Day Celebration, The main event of the Festival will be the
• Street Performance and
• Musical Dance Theatre Competition
among the different Barangay Clusters.
The competition is akin to the traditional “comparsa” except that it now accommodates all types of live instrumentation. Themes, storyline or concept must be culled or inspired from Mandaue’s history, heritage, culture and values, outstanding Mandauehanons, achievers, best products and other prides of the City.
By using the old spelling of the name, it is easily understood that the nature and focus of the festival is the city’s history, heritage and culture. By using the trajectory of the past, the festival allow its audience and participants to reflect on its present and exhibit the hopes and dreams of the Mandauehanons for their city. Thus in a subtler way, pride of place and belongingness is embedded especially among the young Mandauehanons who are expected to be the major participants and beneficiaries of this program.
